|Module prerequisites:||Typically first and second year physiology courses. Students will be required to obtain an average of at least 55% in their second year exams and to have completed and passed PHOL2001 Animal And Human Physiology or a similar module containing appropriate laboratory experience.|
|Module outline:||A research based project allowing final year BSc students to conduct original research in the laboratory of a member of academic staff or in one of the laboratories of our associated Institutes.|
|Module aims:||To introduce students to contemporary research methods in a specific area of physiology, to develop the ability to evaluate critically both theories and evidence and to produce graduates well equipped for advanced study, research and for a wide variety of careers in the private or public sector. This laboratory based project will be written up as a scientific report to include a substantial account of related published work and of the methods used as well as a description and discussion of the results obtained. Students will also be expected to defend a poster presentation of their project.|
|Module objectives:||Practical experience of research methods, of designing an investigation and analysing the results of and of the writing-up and poster presentation of the study.|
|Key skills provided by module:||1. The ability to plan and execute under supervision, an experiment or investigation, analyse critically the results and draw valid conclusions. Students should be able to evaluate the level of uncertainty in their results, understand the significance of error analysis and be able to compare these results with expected outcomes, theoretical predictions or with published data. They should be able to evaluate the significance of their results in this context. 2. The ability to communicate both orally and in writing complex scientific ideas and the conclusions of an experiment, investigation or project concisely, accurately and informatively. 5. The ability to manage their own learning and to make use of appropriate texts, research articles and other primary sources. 6. Experimental skills showing the competent use of specialised equipment, the ability to identify appropriate pieces of equipment and to master new techniques and equipment (applies to students with experimental projects).|

|Notes:||Students eligible for the module will be invited to submit applications for up to 5 projects, in order of preference. Supervisors of these projects will then select students to work with them based on prior academic performance and/or interview, e-mail, 'phone, Skype dialogue. With the agreement of the module organiser, students are also free to arrange projects with other members of staff who are not within the above scheme. After confirming a project you and your supervisor must fill in and sign the Project Registration Form and take it to the Biosciences Teaching Office, Rm G10, Medawar Building, for approval by the end of the second week of Term 1. We will not accept your registration onto the module without receipt of this form. Dissertations and posters must be submitted to the Biosciences Teaching Office, Rm G10, Medawar Building, by deadlines (to be specified on Moodle) towards the end of Term 2. These dates will be the absolute deadlines and extensions given only in truly exceptional circumstances. Reports and/or posters handed in after the deadline will incur the standard Faculty penalties. Two printed copies of the report are required plus an identical electronic file copy submitted through the Turnitin link on the Moodle site. The latter will be screened for plagiarism.
