Module prerequisites:Some basic knowledge of statistical analysis is required (e.g. as provided in PALS1006). 
Module outline:Students learn some advanced principles of research methodology,e.g., factorial design. Furthermore, advanced statistical methods including multiple linear regression, binary logistic regression, Chi Squared test of independence, and different forms of analysis of variance (ANOVA) are introduced. It is assumed that students attending the module have a basic understanding of experimental research methodology, descriptive statistics and basic inferential statistics (t-tests and non-parametric statistics). The mathematical content of this course is minimal and we use computers for all but the simplest calculations. 
Module aims:
  • To teach the principles of research across a range of methodologies, so that students can understand the rationale behind the numerous studies referred to throughout their BSc programme.
  • To introduce students to commonly used inferential statistical tests and the procedures needed to perform these tests using SPSS. Special attention will be paid to different effect size measures and their interpretation.
  • To enable students to understand and evaluate the research methodology and statistical procedures used by experimenters when reading research papers in their studies.
  • To provide students with the necessary skills needed to design, execute and analyse the results of their research projects in the third year.
  • To encourage students to apply the statistical knowledge and expertise learned in this course to data generated in other units.
  • To teach students fundamental research methodology and computing skills so that they can consider undertaking relevant research in their future careers.
Module objectives:General: The skills learned in this unit are relevant to all the other 2nd and 3rd year units as they will enable students to assess research designs in assigned reading and to evaluate the statistics and conclusions of the experimenters. In addition, this course provides fundamental research skills that will enable students to design and analyse their 3rd year research project and to interpret the relevant literature. 
Key skills provided by module:Cognitive Skills: By the end of the course the students will be able to demonstrate that they can:
  • Outline the advantages and disadvantages of related and unrelated designs and select the most appropriate one.
  • Select the most suitable statistical test taking into account the experimental design, the type of data and the experimental questions asked by the experimenter.
  • Select a proper statistical model for factorial repeated measures or between-subjects design.
Practical and Transferable Skills: By the end of the course the students will be able to demonstrate that they can:
  • Interpret tables and graphs (related to research in psychology and language sciences) containing information about means, medians, percentiles, ranges, standard deviations, standard error, confidence intervals. (They will be able to make use of these skills in other taught modules of the BSc programme.)
  • Analyse data collected in other units using the statistical knowledge and computing skills learned on this course.
These outcomes will be achieved through:
  • Teaching of the syllabus outlined above.
  • Guidance and formative feedback from tutors on non-assessed exercises in practical computing workshops.
  • Computer assisted learning exercises set for study time.
