Module outline:Through this module, students will gain a better understanding of the process of spoken communication, with a focus on the production and perception of speech. The course will cover basic concepts in speech acoustics and speech perception. Students will also learn about research methods and instrumentation in these fields and will apply their knowledge to the description and investigation of speaker-listeners. Topics will include: • Acoustic-phonetic characteristics of vowels, consonants and connected discourse discourse • The effect of speaker age, sex and gender on speech production • Speaker-listener interaction • Basic principles of speech perception: use of acoustic, visual and linguistic cues • Development of speech perception • Speech perception in bilinguals/L2 learners  
Module aims:This unit aims to: 1. To give an understanding of basic speech acoustics and of the acoustic description of speech sounds. 2. To give an understanding of the processes involved in speech perception for populations of children and adults with normal hearing.  
Module objectives:At the end of the module students will be able to understand: 1. the main research areas in speech sciences 2. the main instruments and techniques for experimental research in these areas. 3. the main acoustic cues needed to identify vowels and consonants. 4. about the development of speech perception  
Key skills provided by module:Intellectual (thinking) skills: Logical and theoretical thinking, critical evaluation of scientific papers, reading and writing skills Practical skills (able to): to carry out acoustic-phonetic measurements of speech sounds, to run perception experiment and analyse data from such experiments. Transferable skills (able to): computing skills, skill to conduct behavioural experiments. These outcomes will be achieved through: - Reading recommended research papers and textbooks - Writing coursework and exam papers - carrying out speech production analyses and speech perception experiments in the laboratory sessions
