Module prerequisites:Some knowledge of statistics for those not taking the first year PALS stats course. Please contact the module organiser with any queries about this. 
Module outline:The module provides an introduction to key concepts and debates in memory research, including models of working memory and processes involved in the encoding, storage and retrieval of memories. While the main focus is on normal memory processes, there is also some coverage of memory disorders. 
Module aims:The course aims to: • Provide an overview of key concepts in the study of learning and memory • Promote an understanding of the variety of research methods used to study memory • Encourage critical evaluation of the scientific literature in this area • Consider real-world applications of research in memory • Provide an opportunity to practise knowledge of experimental methods and apply this to topics in memory  
Module objectives:By the end of the module students will: • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of selected topics in memory research, including (1) Working memory; (2) Factors affecting the successful encoding and retrieval of memories, and how to apply this knowledge to their own learning; (3) Reliability of memory, and false memory • Be familiar with some of the methods typically used to study memory, and their advantages and limitations • Have experienced participation in experimental research and know how to run, analyse and write up a memory experiment in the form of a lab report  
Key skills provided by module:Students will develop skills in writing up an experiment as a lab report, and in understanding and critically evaluating evidence in the field of memory.

Notes:Module is assessed by coursework (lab report) worth 50%, and exam worth 50%.
