Module outline:The module provides a general introduction to cell biology, developmental biology and tissue structure. Topics will include: Membrane structure and function, cellular organelles, cytoskeleton, cell signalling, cell division, cell physiology, basic principles of embryonic development, cell fate, cell differentiation, and tissue architecture (histology). There are practicals on tissue architecture, developmental biology, and cell physiology. 
Module aims:The module provides an introduction to significant aspects of cell and developmental biology. Its aim is to prepare students for more advanced modules that they may wish to pursue in 2nd year, such as CELL2006 (Cell Biology), CELL2007 (Principles of Cellular Control), CELL2008 (Integrative Cell Biology), and BIOL2010 (The Biology of Development).  
Module objectives:At the end of the module students will have a basic understanding of cell biology and developmental biology. To understand how cells function and how they integrate to form complex tissues and organs.
