Module prerequisites:None, but BIOL2009 Animal Biodiversity is recommended. The course also complements GEOL2008 Vertebrate Palaeontology and Evolution, and GEOL3036 Biodiversity and Macroevolutionary Patterns.  
Module outline:The course will provide a broad review of vertebrate life and evolution from a variety of perspectives, including: the fossil record, modern evolutionary and functional anatomy, morphological and molecular evidence.  
Module aims:Students will become familiar with the range of modern vertebrates, and their adaptations and classification. Methods of study will be emphasised, including the building of phylogenetic trees, use of molecular and morphological data, and biogeographic reconstruction. Further the fossil record for relevant groups will also be discussed as well as the relationships of fossil and living forms.  
Module objectives:To gain an understanding of the diversity of modern and extinct vertebrates. Phylogenetic inter-relationships at class, order, family, genus and species levels. To understand and be able to apply methods of phylogenetic reconstruction. To appreciate fundamental evolutionary and functional anatomy for the main vertebrate groups, including morphological analysis and identification using hard and soft tissue anatomy. 
Key skills provided by module:Specimen observation and assessment; methods of phylogenetic reconstruction (also applicable to areas outside Biology); understanding of molecular applications to systematics; taxonomy and classification; literature review; essay writing; oral communication; teamwork. Contemporary research techniques in evolutionary biology and systematics.
