Module prerequisites:Interest in environmental biology, ecology and/or whole-organism biology.Limited to 20 students.  
Module outline:This course includes a field trip to the Scottish Highlands. The course provides an introduction to studying the effects of the environment on aquatic and terrestrial animals and plants. The course will run for two weeks in early June (5th - 16th June 2017) and be split between two sites. During the first part, we will be based in London and do field work on Hampstead Heath. For the second part, we will be travelling to Kindrogan Field Centre in Scotland. 
Module aims:To provide training in field sampling methods from an array of viewpoints in environmental biology. 
Module objectives:To explain the key elements of field studies. These include the role of data collection in the contexts of organism abundance and distribution patterns; identification of species and methods of specimen capture; assays of performance of individuals and populations and measurement of environmental factors.  
Key skills provided by module:Project planning, report writing, oral presentation, statistical analysis, team work.

Notes:The exact dates of the course will depend on the exam timetable, though it is likely to run w/c 4th and 11th June - ie. out of term time. Please contact the module organiser if you have any questions. Please note that this module can be oversubscribed, and so we have to set criteria in which to select students, these are: Preference to students who have done or have chosen BIOL2009 and/or BIOL2012. Preference to students doing Biodiversity & Conservation or Zoology. Preference to 3rd year MSci students. We encourage ALL students wishing to take this module to sign up as early as possible on Portico. Students are required to pay for their own travel to and from Scotland - this is likely to be in the region of £100 (it is £118 in 2016/17, but less with a railcard).
