|Module prerequisites:||A good general background in cell biology is required; students interested in taking the module should contact the module organizer in order that the suitability of their academic background may be assessed.|
|Module outline:||This module concentrates on the key questions and state-of-the-art techniques in modern cell biology. There will be a particular emphasis on modern imaging approaches and techniques allowing the monitoring of the dynamics of cellular processes. The course has been recently modernised to include experts in the rapidly growing disciplines of super-resolution microscopy, cytoskeletal dynamics and imaging of gene expression in living cells.|
|Module aims:||To provide an understanding of some key topics in modern cell biology in relation to research questions in the field and related disease conditions. All of the lecturers on this module are actively researching in these fields and so are in a position to provide the student not just with background information but also with cutting edge research and primary knowledge of the field.|
|Module objectives:||Introduction to concepts and problems in selected topics of current cell biology; Understanding the methods by which data are obtained and their limitations; To study original scientific literature relevant to cell function; To develop skills to judge the quality and validity of literature.|
|Key skills provided by module:||Live Cell Imaging is a key tool in modern cell biology and a firm understanding of imaging techniques, advantages and limitations is essential. We therefore have a lecture on imaging techniques followed by Imaging Practicals on confocal microscopes to small groups of 4 students so that everyone gets the chance to drive a confocal microscope and generate multicolour images of cells themselves. This should help with laboratory practical projects as well as the understanding of images in research papers.|

|Notes:||The in course essay will be written in the style of a "Cell minireview" or "Nature News and Views". The lecturers will suggest recent key papers in their field and your essay will critically evaluate the paper and within the context of the broader field, which will have been covered in the lecture. The imaging practical will consist of capturing a high-resolution image, then writing this up in the style of a journal figure. The module runs in Term 1, Blocks E & F.|
