Implant Dentistry: Bone Grafting Using the Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) Technique

Overview

This two-day hands-on course will give you a comprehensive overview of bone grafting for dental implants using the guided bone regeneration technique (GBR)

You'll learn the principles of assessment, treatment planning and surgical approaches to GBR

The course will be delivered through lectures, a hands-on animal model workshop, videos and live-patient surgeries (subject to COVID regulation).

All course tutors are GDC-registered specialists with substantial implant experience.

The course is run by the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in London. 

Course aims

This course will:

  • outline the basic science of socket healing
  • outline the assessment and treatment planning of patients with deficient bone volume
  • consider the timing for implant surgery
  • help you understand the principles of guided bone regeneration
  • review the biomaterials used in GBR
  • demonstrate the surgical techniques involved in GBR

Course times

Each of the days will run from approximately 9:30am to 5pm.

Topics covered will include:

  • Assessment and treatment planning of the deficient ridge
  • Clinical and anatomical considerations in bone grafting
  • Surgical approaches to GBR
  • Selection and application of appropriate biomaterials

There'll also be:

  • a hands-on workshop
  • live patient surgeries / videos

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you should:

  • understand the assessment and treatment planning of cases with reduced bone volume
  • understand the anatomical considerations, timings and surgical approaches to GBR
  • understand the selection and application of biomaterials for GBR
  • understand the principles and surgical technique of GBR
  • have demonstrated GBR technique on an animal model

    Who this course is for

    This short course is for dentists who are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). You must have a basic level of surgical implant dentistry experience to take it.

    Cost

    This course is £1,850.

    You can book this course and the two-day Implant Dentistry: Maxillary Sinus Augmentation for a combined price of £3,000.

    CPD points and certificate

    You'll gain 13 hours of verifiable CPD and a certificate of attendance on completing the course.

    Dr Dev Patel

    Dr Dev Patel

    Dr Dev Patel is the programme director of implant programmes and a principal teaching fellow at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London.

    Dev graduated from King’s College School of Dentistry, London, in 1991. He worked as an Oral Surgeon at St Georges Hospital, London, Kings College Dental School and Luton and Dunstable Hospital Trust. His interests in implantology led him to Prosthodontic training at the Eastman Dental Institute where he was accepted as one of the first specialist trainees in the field of Prosthodontics in the UK. After 3 years of training, he received the Masters in Clinical Dentistry in the field of Prosthodontics with distinction and became one of the first dentists to have dual specialist registration in both Prosthodontics and Oral Surgery.

    Dev was appointed clinical lecturer in 2000 in the department of Implantology led by Professor Sindet Pedersen. He was promoted to Implant Programme Coordinator in 2003 and subsequently Programme Director of Implant Programmes in 2005. Dev developed and introduced the Diploma in Implant Dentistry which he has been running since 2007.

    His active interests are in teaching and education in implant dentistry and he lectures in both the surgical and prosthodontic aspects of implant dentistry on local, national and international levels. He was promoted to Principal Teaching Fellow at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London in 2014 and has continued to develop implant training programmes for dentists in the UK and abroad.

    Dev’s practice interests are focused on aesthetics, prosthodontics and implant dentistry and he is a partner of the Dentalrooms which is a multidisciplinary specialist practice based in Wimbledon, London.

    Safa Somi

    Safa Somi

    Safa Somi completed her Master of Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from Cardiff University with distinction in 2014 and gained Membership in Prosthodontics Diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh afterward. She has been recognised by General Dental Council as a Specialist in Prosthodontics following her extensive speciality training and experience in managing complex restorative cases.

    Safa was appointed as a part-time Clinical Lecturer at Cardiff Dental School from 2014 till 2018 where she was teaching postgraduate dentists at Master of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) and MSc (Implantology). She was responsible for didactic and clinical teaching in advanced restorative and implant dentistry to dentists undergoing specialist training for the Membership in Restorative Dentistry Diploma. At Cardiff University, Safa was also involved in a few research projects, her research interest was in the field of tissue regeneration.

    Safa is now a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow on the Implant Dentistry PG Diploma at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute.
