Overview

This one-day hands-on course will introduce you to the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients.

This course will cover:

• symptoms and clinical manifestation of the TMD patient
• function and physiology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
• causes of, and various conditions which lead to, TMD
• the diagnosis pathway and required diagnostic examinations
• management of the acute TMD symptoms
• occlusal complications
• TMD occlusal complications to the restorative treatment
• splints fabrication, including Michigan splints, which patients need splints, what is sent to the laboratory, how to fit the splint

The possible treatment options covered in the course are:

• prescribed medications and complimentary therapies
• surgical treatment: how is the general dental practitioner (GDP) involved? When should you refer and to whom? 
• splints and Michigan splint fabrication, both traditional and digital

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:

• diagnose and help treat the acute symptoms of the TMD patient
• fabricate and fit a Michigan Splint

Who this course is for

The course is aimed at dentists at any stage of their career.

You must hold an approved dental qualification.

CPD points and certificate

The course will give you 6.5 hours of verifiable CPD. You'll also get a certificate of attendance.

Structure and teaching

You'll learn through a combination of:

• 50% interactive, evidence-based seminars using clinical videos
• 50% hands-on training in the skills-laboratory

There'll be a small student-to-instructor ratio to ensure support during hands-on practice.

Course team

Dr Konstantina Dina Dedi

Konstantina Dina Dedi is the Director of Aesthetic Dentistry Programmes and a Principal Clinical Teaching Fellow at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, where she teaches postgraduates in the fields of prosthodontics, aesthetic and implant dentistry. She was awarded a Specialty Degree in Prosthodontics (Fixed, Removable and Implant Prosthodontics) in 1997 from the University of Missouri- Kansas City.

Prior to her current appointment, she taught for nine years at the University of North Carolina USA as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Prosthodontics, Removable Clinics Director and also as director of the ITI Implant Prosthodontic Scholarship Program. She has presented numerous lectures and continuing education courses in U.S.A., Europe and the Middle East on anterior aesthetics and immediate loading of dental implants.

In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious “Diplomate” status from the American Board of Prosthodontics. (Only recipients of this award are eligible to become Programme Directors in Prosthodontic Specialty training Programmes in American Universities). In 2007 she was presented with an Honorary Visiting Professorship from the State Medical and Pharmaceutical University “Nicolae Testemitsanu” of the Republic of Moldova. She has been elected a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP), one of only a few dentists in the UK to have this award.

Professor Simon Holmes

Simon has been Professor of Craniofacial Trauma and Consultant in Oral and Maxiofacial Surgery at the Royal London Hospital since 2003. He leads the Craniofacial trauma team and specialises totally in the management of facial reconstructive surgery and aesthetics.

He has introduced numerous new surgical and aesthetic techniques together with digital treatment planning technologies, and developed a comprehensive and fully integrated approach to facial trauma, which has proven both innovative and successful.

He has lectured widely nationally and internationally, and has written two major textbooks on craniofacial trauma, with a third awaiting publication. He has published in major anatomical textbooks including Gray’s anatomy. He has published widely in the Maxillofacial literature, and is on the editorial review board for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orbit, Injury, and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

His research interests are around assessment of severity of injury with development of assessment of outcome tools. He has developed an iPhone App as a craniofacial skeletal fracture severity score calculator.
