This flexible degree provides a foundational understanding of the different areas of biological science, before providing a choice of specialisms that include biodiversity and conservation, genetics, computational biology and zoology.
With a strong emphasis on supervised independent research and practical laboratory experience for both BSc and MSci students, from first year onwards you’ll tackle real-world bioscience challenges.
Using datasets drawn from the latest active research at UCL or our partner institutions such as the Natural History Museum or the Zoological Society of London, you’ll work both independently and in teams to investigate everything from malaria-infected red blood cell proteins to frog skeletal evolution.
On both the BSc and the MSci, you’ll get to choose either a broad biological sciences path, or one of the following six specialisms:
Biodiversity and conservation
If you’re passionate about environmental change this is the programme for you. This stream looks at the impact of humans on the planet’s biodiversity, the effect of pollution; and the overriding problems connected to climate change.
Cell and developmental biology
Cells are the building blocks of life itself. With this specialism, you’ll explore biology form the cellular and molecular perspectives. This degree spans fields of both biological sciences and biochemistry.
Computational biology (MSci only)
Recent advances in bioinformatics and biological computational methods have made skills in these areas extremely valuable, with a vast range of applications across pharmaceutical, biotech and disease research. UCL were the first university in the UK to offer computational biology at undergraduate level.
Genetics
Covering molecular genetics, genomics, model organisms, evolutionary genetics and human genetics, this specialism will prepare you for postgraduate study in almost any area of life sciences.
Human genetics
Comprised of a similar set of modules to the genetics specialism, the human genetics pathway provides a more medically relevant focus if you’re aiming for postgraduate entry into medicine or medical research.
Zoology
This specialism is designed for students with a particular interest in the behaviour, ecology, physiology and classification of all animals.
