Environmental DNA comprises small fragments of genetic material released into water, soil or air. By sequencing this DNA or applying other molecular assays, scientists, resource managers and conservation professionals can gain taxonomic information across the whole tree of life. Our research has pushed the frontiers of this technology, spearheading research on environmental RNA, collecting eDNA with drones, and investigating genetic information collected by the UK’s air quality networks. The People and Nature Lab also works closely with biomonitoring stakeholders and the end users of this technology.

At the People and Nature Lab we have a dedicated clean lab for low-copy genetic samples, which includes hoods with UV and HEPA filters.  If you would like to find out more, please contact the UCL People and Nature Lab team.
