Weitao Xiao recently completed an MSc in Pharmaceutics and is now studying with us for a PhD.

Can you share a particularly rewarding research experience you’ve had during your studies?
The primary research experience occurs during the third term, as all MSc Pharmaceutics students commence their final project within their chosen group. I conducted my project at the laboratory of Dr Melissa Rayner. I principally focused on repurposing drugs for the treatment of injuries to peripheral nerves. Throughout this experience, I cultivated my proficiency in biological technical abilities and acquainted myself with laboratory circumstances, which greatly enhanced my prospects for future professional endeavors. Significantly, the final project serves as a means of enhancing independent research skills in the MSc Pharmaceutics program, which is mostly focused on academic instruction. The practical component of the project can effectively compensate for this imbalance.
How has the programme helped you in preparing for your future career?
The programme compensated for my deficiencies in laboratory procedures and presentation abilities. During the first two semesters, I had the opportunity to significantly develop my critical and innovative thinking, both of which are essential qualities for future success in the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, the culmination of the academic year with a three-month high-quality lab introduction and practical can significantly enhance students’ proficiency with advanced instrumentation and collaboration with lab colleagues. In its entirety, this programme effectively shaped me into a well-rounded individual with expertise in both research and industry-relevant fields.
Do you feel the skills and knowledge gained during the programme are relevant to the pharmaceutical industry?
Undoubtedly pertinent to the field, with further developments to anticipate. While the programme settings on the official website may appear to encompass numerous courses that resemble professional research skills, each academic or lecturer will also illustrate how the material can be applied to industrial scenarios, drawing from their own prior experience in pertinent domains. This is one of the reasons I adore this programme: they organise the experts in this field for each lecture; consequently, we gain lots of insight from it.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this programme?
Just do it, no need to doubt. I am sure that you will benefit from this programme, which will make you more well-rounded in this academic area.
Would you recommend this programme to others, and why?
Of course, here you will build great friendships with faculty, students and staff. And you can enjoy the city and all the culture in this central area of Bloomsbury. Most importantly, you will acquire knowledge which is greatly applicable to the area of pharmaceutics.
