The Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine has named Dr Janin Lautenschläger, Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology at UCL, as one of its 2026 Lister Prize Fellows, recognising her pioneering research into the molecular mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s disease and neurodegeneration.
Janin’s research explores how phase separation of alpha-synuclein and associated synaptic proteins creates organisation at nerve terminals, and how disruption of these biological condensates contributes to Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
By combining quantitative biophysics, advanced imaging approaches, and cellular and neuronal models, Janin’s group investigates the fundamental principles that govern neuronal organisation and how their breakdown drives disease. Her work aims to reveal how membrane-less condensates regulate synaptic function and how their dysfunction may contribute to neurodegenerative conditions.

The Lister Prize is one of the UK’s most competitive biomedical research awards, providing flexible funding to support outstanding early-career scientists as they pursue ambitious and innovative research programmes. Each 2026 Fellow will receive £300,000 in flexible funding over five years to advance their discoveries.
Janin joins a cohort of eight exceptional researchers selected this year from a highly competitive pool of applicants, with research spanning areas including neuroscience, immunology, ageing, cancer biology, respiratory disease, and human development.
Her excellence in research has previously been recognised through her contributions to understanding the biophysical mechanisms that shape neuronal function and disease, establishing her as a leading researcher in the field of neurodegeneration.
The Lister Prize Fellowship will provide vital support for Janin’s continued work to uncover how alpha-synuclein organisation influences neuronal health and to advance understanding of Parkinson’s disease mechanisms.
