  • John Foreman Announcement

The Faculty of Life Sciences notes with great sadness the passing of Professor John Foreman, whose 41-year association with UCL was marked by steady dedication and wide-ranging service. Professor Foreman first joined UCL as a medical student, completing an intercalated BSc and PhD in Pharmacology before returning to clinical training. After early clinical posts and a year as Visiting Instructor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, he rejoined UCL in 1979 as a lecturer in Pharmacology.

He went on to serve the university in numerous capacities, becoming a Fellow of UCL in 1993, Professor of Immunopharmacology in 1994, and Dean of Students in 1996. In these roles he was known for his sound judgement, reliability and commitment to student welfare. His long-standing interest in widening participation was shaped by his own experience as the first in his family to attend university.

Professor Foreman was an accomplished researcher, a former editor of the British Journal of Pharmacology, and a visiting professor at the universities of Tasmania and Odense. He was also a respected teacher whose lectures were consistently well received by students.

His many years as a halls-of-residence warden produced a number of memorable stories, all of which he handled with characteristic patience and good humour.

Professor Foreman’s contributions to UCL were significant and long-lasting. He will be remembered with respect and appreciation by colleagues across the Faculty and the wider university community.
