A warm welcome to Marybelle Cameron-Pack who recently joined the Gems lab as a Ph.D. student. Marybelle, who hails from New Brunswick, Canada, is working in collaboration with Bruce Zhang on understanding the biological basis of stochastic inter-individual variation in ageing rate in C. elegans.

In September, Bruce Zhang gave a talk about his new findings on biodemography to at the Groningen-Jena Aging Meeting, in Jena, Germany, and Hongyuan Wang presented her work on competing causes of C. elegans death at the British Society for Research on Ageing Annual Scientific Meeting, in Manchester.

In June David Gems spoke at the Reform Club, in September on the Voice of Islam Radio Breakfast Show, and in November on the Financial Times podcast Defying death: The origins of ageing, https://www.ft.com/content/a33d20fc-c4b5-4790-8f8c-5877f65d4bca .

Recent studies from the Gems lab include one using machine learning to identify causes of death in ageing C. elegans, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41272092/ , another explaining the causes of osteoarthritis in terms of evolutionary physiology, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40381687/ (in a rheumatology journal), and an updated version of the multifactorial model of age-related disease, now in press; for a preprint see https://www.preprints.org/frontend/manuscript/7f092968f2e45d6ed9f9231762970799/download_pub.
