TALK TITLE:” From commitment to action: Tracking progress toward global targets on protected and conserved areas based on insights from the Protected Planet Initiative “
BIO: Jasmin Upton works on the Protected Planet Initiative at UNEP-WCMC, working to consolidate information and knowledge on the worlds protected and conserved areas as well as tracking progress towards international environmental targets. Jasmin also leads UNEP-WCMC’s work on territories and areas conserved by Indigenous Peoples and local communities and manages the ICCA Registry, working with national partners and ICCA custodians to collate data and promote the recognition of ICCAs in area based conservation. Jasmin holds a M.Res. in Biodiversity, Evolution and Conservation from UCL, is an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium and a member of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas.
ABSTRACT: In 2022, the world adopted an international framework aimed at reshaping our relationship with nature and biodiversity, along with a system for monitoring progress toward its four overarching goals and 23 targets. Jasmin will discuss the work of the Protected Planet Initiative and how it collaborates with partners to track progress toward Target 3 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which seeks to achieve an effective and equitable global network of protected and conserved areas.
