ISMB Seminar - Buzz Baum, LMB Cambridge
Title: "Our archaeal origins"
We are delighted to announce the ISMB Summer/ Term 3 Seminar Series.
Our first guest is Buzz Baum from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge.
Abstract: In this talk we will explore the archaeal origins of the eukaryotic cell. As we will see, while many aspects of archaeal cell biology seem other-worldly, much of the machinery that was once thought to define the eukaryotic cell, including actin, tubulin and ESCRT-III, was inherited from our archaeal ancestors. Building on this observation, we will look at the fascinating biology of archaea, and will see how a better understanding of the archaeal ESCRT-III dependent membrane remodelling machinery can shed light on the workings of its eukaryotic counterparts, and on our evolutionary origins.
