CCMN SEMINAR - Prof Kevin Murphy - Imperial College London
Title: ‘The function of foods: how nutrients regulate glucose and energy homeostasis’
Host: Alice Adriaenssens
Kevin is interested in how the gut senses specific macronutrients and overall nutritional status. He studies the hormonal and neuronal pathways by which the gut signals to the brain and the pancreas to regulate food intake and glucose homeostasis.
Kevin is a Prof of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Imperial College London, and acts as Admissions Tutor for Widening Participation in Medicine, and as Director of Postgraduate Studies for four Faculty of Medicine Depts.
Kevin's research focuses on the role of the hypothalamus in the control of energy homeostasis and reproduction. Both of these physiological roles have important implications for human health. He is particularly interested in how the gut senses nutritional status and signals to appetite centres of the brain such as the hypothalamus and brain stem to regulate food intake. Kevin is also interested in how central hypothalamic neuropeptide circuits act to control body weight and reproductive function.
