Marina Escalera Zamudio

Principal Investigator

I am a computational and evolutionary virologist based at UCL’s Genetics Institute (UGI) and the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE). I was born in Mexico, where completed my degree and MSc in Biology at UNAM-Mexico, and earned my PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin. From 2017 to 2022, I was a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Oxford, supported by two independent fellowships Organization (EMBO 2017-2019, Leverhulme Trust ECR 2019-2022). In 2023, I joined UCL to work for the END-VOC project (with Prof. Balloux, Dr. van Dorp). Now, supported by a UCL Rosetrees-Excellence Fellowship, I lead projects that integrate multidisciplinary data into evolutionary modelling, promising to deliver a tool that can assess epidemiological success and anticipate viral genetic variation.
