Postgraduate opportunities
The Department has a thriving postgraduate programme. It recruits 15-20 PhD students each year from a variety of sources including Research Councils, Charity, UCL schemes and a number of inter-disciplinary centres across UCL.
The Department is closely associated with a number of Doctoral Training Centres:
- CoMPLEX (Centre for Mathematics and Physics in the Life Sciences and Experimental Biology)
- UCL-Birkbeck MRC Doctoral Training Programme
- LIDo (BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme)
- TREES DLA (Training, Research & Equity in Environmental Sciences Doctoral Landscape Award)
There are two different processes for Fellowships at GEE. The first is for Independent Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers with some postdoctoral experience who are ready to start up their own independent research programme.
The second is Short Term and Post Doctoral Fellowships. These are suitable for researchers who have recently completed a doctorate.
GEE is home to over 50 research groups and a thriving community of some 200 Post-Docs, PhD Students, and support staff. Get in contact with research group leaders at CLOE and check out our research themes to find opportunities within existing groups.
The Division of Biosciences provides a range of support for its postdoctoral researchers to help achieve their aspirations in both career and work-life balance.

Undergraduate and Masters opportunities
Evolutionary biology has always been a major part of Biological Sciences at UCL, and we have an extraordinary history in the subject. Our BSc and MSci degrees include courses in each year relevant to evolutionary biology ranging from phylogenetics and computational biology through evolutionary biochemistry, evo devo and field courses in ecosystem evolution.
CLOE has a dedicated stream in the UCL Biosciences MRes on Origins and Evolution of Life. If you would like to apply, please go to the CLOE stream on the UCL Bioscience MRes.
The CLOE MRes offers an opportunity to undertake a major research project in the labs of any of the CLOE research groups. The programme is designed for students who wish to undertake a PhD or to convert from other relevant disciplines and for those who wish to enter employment in an advanced capacity in industry or the public sector.
CLOE is part of the GEE summer studentships scheme.
