When the First World War was declared in August 1914, Pares offered his services as a Russian expert to the Foreign Office and set out for St Petersburg. Eventually the British Government gave him a commission. This was to live with the Russian Army at the front and deliver dispatches back to the British Embassy. Officially Pares was a stretcher-bearer in the Civil Red Cross with the Russian Third Army. Pares published a book on his experiences "Day by day with the Russian army" (1915) and remained with the army until early 1917 when news of the Russian Revolution reached him. He then made his way to St Petersburg.
