In 1902 Pares became a lecturer for Liverpool University where he did extension work (adult education). He was prominent in the setting up of the first School of Russian Studies at the university in 1907. Pares remained at Liverpool University as Professor of Russian history, language and literature until the First World War although the terms of his employment allowed him to spend a term of each academic year in Russia. He was one of the editors of the "Russian Review", a periodical founded in 1912 and published by the school. He was also a founder of the Anglo-Russian Committee a body set up to promote Anglo-Russian relations and formed during the visit of Duma members to Britain in 1909 (see also PAR/3). There was also a paralell Anglo-Russian Committee in Russia.
