LOE/1 - Loewenson's Russian-English military dictionary (circa) (1940-1945) (circa)

Loewenson worked on his Russian-English military dictionary during the Second World War and had hopes that it would be published by the British War Office. However it was decided by the British Government that such a work was no longer needed.

Contents: card index for dictionary of Russian-English military terminology. The cards are bundled roughly by letter of the Cyrillic alphabet but there is no other discernable order.

Loewenson was Russian by birth and after his arrival in Britain in 1933 he taught Russian and gave public lectures on Russian affairs to earn a living. He was appointed SSEES' librarian in 1940 and during his career here he wrote a number of articles and bibliographies on Russian and to a lesser extent East European history and affairs.

Contents: photostats of manuscripts re Russia from the Bodleian Library and the British Museum Library, card indexes and bibliographies of works re Russia and the Balkans in particularly those in SSEES and the British Museum Library, papers re lecture given by Loewenson on Russia and a Russian-English military vocabulary.

Loewenson had an interest in British seventeenth and early eighteenth century history.

Contents: photostats of manuscripts from the Bodleian Library, correspondence re Loewenson's appointment as assistant editor of "Writings on British History, 1901-1933" and annual reports of the Institute of Historical Research and the London Library.
