In March 1939 Czechoslovakia was occupied by German forces who established a protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. A Slovak Republic was declared at the same time. In exile Czechoslovak military resistance forces were formed in Poland, France, Britain and the Soviet Union. The majority of the Czechoslovak diplomatic service around the world remained loyal to the pre occupation government. A Czechoslovak Government in exile, based in London and headed by former President Beneš was formed. Czechoslovakia was liberated from German occupation during 1944-1945 and President Beneš returned to Prague in May 1945. During this wartime period Lisicky continued in his post as counsellor of the legation and acting head of the mission at the Czechoslovak embassy in London which worked closely with the Government in exile.
