Chichagov Collection (circa) (1983)
Pavel Vasilievich Chichagov (1767-1848) was the son of a Russian admiral and arctic explorer, Vasili Yakovevich Chichagov and his British wife. He entered the Russian navy at the age of 15, became rear-admiral in 1796 and Minister of Marine in 1802. In 1812 he took command of the army in Turkey and the Government of the Danube Principalities. He was recalled from this post with his army to cut off the retreat of the French army led by Napoleon. This aim was achieved with a great victory at Beretsina in November 1812. After Beretsina, Chichagov retired and spent the remainder of his life in England and France.

Translation of Chichagov's memoirs "Horatius of the Beretsina: the memoirs of Admiral Pavel Vasilievich Chichagov, translated and annotated, with additional material by Dinah Dean". The memoirs provide an account of life in St Petersburg during the reign of Paul I as well as of the battle of Beretsina. In addition the typescript provides an essay on Chichagov by Émil Charles, Chichagov's English will and documents on his British naturalisation; 4 related photographs(circa) 1983
