Buxton Collection (1928)

David Roden Buxton (1910-2003) travelled to the Soviet Union as a student in 1928 to engage in a study of medieval architecture. He also made observations on the living conditions and way of life of the Soviet people. He visited Central and North West Russia, the Volga Region and parts of the Ukraine. He returned in 1932 for a similar visit to Northern Russia. He published accounts of both these journeys. In later life Buxton wrote a number of other works on architecture and on Ethiopia where he lived 1942-1949.

An essay "A Russian village before the five-year plan", detailing Buxton's experiences while travelling in Russia engaged in architectural study and including a plan of a peasant home and a reprint of an article by Buxton "A journey in Soviet Transcaucasia", published as "A journey in Northern Russia" (Edinburgh, 1933)
