The UCL Office for Open Science & Scholarship is excited to be supporting a new initiative to support those enabling Citizen Science across the UK and Ireland.
The team at the UCL Office for Open Science & Scholarship are pleased to be supporting a new initiative in supporting groups and individuals interested in enabling Citizen Science at their institutions. The initial scoping meeting of interested stakeholders took place in July 2025, and an initial action plan was developed.
Network action plan
UCL will facilitate and host the network during its early stages, but the longer-term goal is to evolve into a self-directed community, with rotating responsibilities.
The network will remain open to all Higher Education institutions in the UK and Ireland, particularly libraries, but also any unit providing centralised citizen science support. Membership of the network, mailing list and attendance at events is open to multiple interested parties from each institution but termly meeting attendance will be limited to one or two members each to ensure fairness and balance in discussions.
The intention is to enable open discussion of successes and challenges, and the growth of a community of practice around services supporting Citizen Science. There will be an element of advocacy, but this will not be the focus, rather the focus will be developing community and sharing resources to better enable more institutions to embrace and support citizen science more widely at their institutions.
The network will also focus on upskilling members and providing access to learning materials. Following the initial network meeting, and the collection of suggested topics, areas of interest can be divided into two areas. The first is understanding citizen science tools and techniques that will be in use by our academic colleagues, the second focused on administering and engaging our communities with services being developed.

We are currently in the process of getting a mailing list set up for the network, and creating mechanisms for sharing content but if you would like to ask any questions or be added to a preliminary membership list then let us know.
