UKRI/Wellcome/NIHR submission statement and rights retention

This page provides details of the statements that must accompany journal submissions funded by Wellcome, UKRI or NIHR.

This advice is for research papers funded by Wellcome; research, review and conference papers with UKRI funding submitted from 1 April 2022; and NIHR-funded research papers submitted from 1 June 2022. For further information about these funders' open access policies, and their previous policies, see our research funders page.

Wellcome grant holders must include a mandatory statement in all submissions of original research to peer-reviewed journals. UKRI and NIHR have provided similar statements, designed to enable papers in subscription (hybrid) journals to meet their open access requirements. NIHR's statement must be included in all papers submitted to subscription (hybrid) journals.

UCL recommends that all Wellcome/UKRI/NIHR papers include their funder's statement. If your paper is funded by both UKRI/NIHR and Wellcome, use Wellcome's statement.

The wording below should be included in the funding acknowledgements section of your manuscript and any cover letter or note accompanying the submission. If this statement conflicts with your publishing agreement you may need to negotiate your contract: see the ‘non-compliant journals’ section of our UKRI/Wellcome complying information.

Standard wording

For submissions without a licence exception, use the following text:

UKRI/NIHR

‘For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising’ .

Wellcome

‘This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Wellcome Trust [Grant number]. For the purpose of Open Access, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.’

Alternative wording for licence exceptions

Wellcome

Use the following statement only if you have negotiated a licence exception with the Wellcome Trust before submitting.

'This research was funded in whole, or in part, by the Wellcome Trust [Grant number xxxxx]. For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a CC BY-ND public copyright licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising from this submission.'

UKRI/NIHR

Use the following statement on submissions from 1/4/2022 only if you have negotiated a licence exception with UKRI before submitting, or if you are using the Open Government Licence.

  • Creative Commons Attribution No-derivatives (CC BY-ND) licence: ‘For the purpose of open access, the author has applied a Creative Commons Attribution No-derivatives (CC BY-ND) licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising.’
  • Open Government Licence: ‘For the purpose of open access, the author has applied an Open Government Licence to any Author Accepted Manuscript version arising.’
