Transformative subscription deals

Transformative publisher deals allow papers with a UCL corresponding author, published with a particular publisher, to be made Gold open access. They cover most or all of a publisher's journals.

Transformative deals are a way for publishers to transition their subscription journals to full open access. The costs of open access are part of an overall UCL payment covering both subscriptions and open access publishing.

To enable papers funded by the UK Research Councils (UKRI) and the Wellcome Trust to be published open access under these deals, authors funded by the UK Research Councils or the Wellcome Trust are encouraged, where appropriate, to act as corresponding author on a paper.

American Chemical Society

Research articles and uncommissioned reviews funded by a UCL UKRI or COAF grant in ACS subscription journals can be published Gold open access under this limited deal, on a first-come-first-served basis.

When you submit, ensure that you are listed as the corresponding author, with your UCL affiliation and e-mail address, in ScholarOne. After acceptance, ACS will send you an e-mail with a link to request open access. This requires you to create a separate account, so it is recommended that you contact the Open Access Team at this point. We will approve eligible articles directly in the ACS system.

European Respiratory Journal

UCL's European Respiratory Journal deal allows all UCL corresponding authors to publish original articles and research letters in this journal Gold open access. UCL strongly encourages all authors to take advantage of this transformative deal.

When you submit, ensure that you are listed as the corresponding author, with your UCL affiliation and e-mail address, in the ERJ's online submission system, ScholarOne, and in your manuscript. This will enable the publisher to identify your article as eligible for open access under the CC BY licence as part of this deal.

Institute of Physics

UCL corresponding authors are eligible to publish research articles and uncommissioned reviews Gold open access in subscription (hybrid) journals managed by IOP (not AAS or other IOP partner journals). UCL strongly encourages all authors to take advantage of this transformative deal.

On submission, state your UCL affiliation clearly in the article submission form and in the article itself. You will be notified that IOP has identified your article as eligible for Gold open access during peer-review or shortly after acceptance, and IOP will ask you to agree to the CC BY licence. If you are not alerted before your article is accepted, IOP advises you to contact the journal.

IWA Publishing

UCL's IWA Publishing deal allows all UCL corresponding authors to publish Gold open access in the IWA's ten subscription and five fully open access journals, including Journal of Water & Climate Change and Water Science & Technology. UCL strongly encourages all authors to take advantage of this transformative deal.

In particular, make sure that you use your UCL e-mail address to submit, and include your UCL affiliation. You may need to update your institutional information in the IWA's Editorial Manager system. In the open access charges section of the submission process, you may need to click to "Apply Discounts" and select UCL as your institution.

This will enable the publisher to identify your paper as eligible to be published open access. You will be offered a choice of Creative Commons (CC) licences. If your funder requires you to publish under the CC BY licence, ensure that you choose it. UCL recommends the CC BY licence for all other papers.

It covers research papers in most of Wiley's subscription (hybrid) and fully open access journals. UCL strongly encourages all authors to take advantage of this transformative deal.

Wiley's online guide includes lists of the journals covered, and instructions:

  • If you are publishing in a subscription (hybrid) journal, after acceptance log in to Wiley Author Services, click "Select OnlineOpen", choose University College London as your affiliation, and provide details of any relevant funding. Then confirm that you would like to make your article OnlineOpen. UCL's Open Access Team will be notified of your request.
  • If you are publishing in a fully open access journal, select University College London as your institution when you submit.
  • If your paper was funded by one of the UK Research Councils (UKRI), COAF medical charities (including Wellcome Trust) or another funder that requires the CC BY licence, ensure that you select this option when asked. UCL encourages other authors to choose CC BY.
