Library refurbishments to create more study space and improve accessibility

The IOE Library and Science Library will offer reduced services while refurbishments take place to improve the facilities and study spaces in each library, with print resources remaining available via Click and Collect.

The works aim to enhance the student and staff experience by creating more accessible, comfortable and modern environments. 

Here’s a rundown of what’s happening in each space:

IOE Library

The IOE Library is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment over all three levels, which will see the creation of at least 170 additional study spaces, improved electrics and new furniture throughout.

Six bookable study pods and one accessible pod will be installed, and décor will be refreshed.

The main library spaces on floors three, four, and five will be closed 9 June - 5 August while the works take place. The Help Desk will remain open throughout, as well as the Click and Collect service, book return/issue, and a regular fetch service.

Science Library

New bookable study spots will be installed, including dedicated postgraduate spaces. A new social study space will be created, the ground floor layout will be improved, and décor will be refreshed.

The Science Library will be closed 9 June - 8 August while the works take place. Click and Collect services will allow users to request Science Library books and Store books to be delivered for collection from any other library. Science Library books can also be returned at any other library.

Alternative accessible entry to the Petrie Museum will be provided while the works are ongoing.

Other spaces

There are additional smaller-scale refurbishment works taking place at the Institute of Archaeology, SSEES and UCL East Libraries this summer, with periods of closure at each: 

• Institute of Archaeology Library will be closed 16 June - 14 July. 
• UCL East Marshgate Library will be closed 30 June - 13 July. 
• SSEES Library will be closed 14 July - 6 August.

Services will switch between spaces during these closures.
