Fines amnesty

1 September 2017

From the start of term, 25th September 2017, Library Services has reintroduced the £20 limit on outstanding fines. Once your fines have reached this amount you will not be able to borrow or renew books or collect inter-library loans until the fines have been paid.

Books on shelves

The purpose of the block is to prevent readers accruing large debts. This was previously part of Library Services policy and its reinstatement will benefit readers and Library Services.

We appreciate that a number of people have outstanding fines greater than £20 and that paying this off could cause hardship. We are introducing a fine amnesty for all fines incurred before 25th September and readers will be asked to pay a maximum of £20 fines. Anything above that amount will be waived. Outstanding payments for lost books or inter library loans must still be paid.

Please clear your account and make a fresh start for the new year.

All fines incurred after Monday 25th September will be expected to be paid in full. Library accounts with a total of £20 fines, or more, will be blocked until the fines have been paid.

If you have any queries, please do get in touch at library@ucl.ac.uk

How to avoid fines

  • Check your Library Account regularly.
  • Be aware of the loan periods of your books.
  • Check your UCL email for notification of requests which have changed the return date on standard loans.
  • Wherever possible, we aim to send you a "Courtesy notice" e-mail to remind you that your books are due back in a few days' time.
  • We will let you know by e-mail as soon as an item is late. Return the item as soon as possible to keep your fine low.
  • Contact us at lib-myaccount@ucl.ac.uk if you have a problem visiting the Library, to discuss your options.
