'Bibliometrics' are quantitative measures of research output which are being used to help evaluate the impact and influence of researchers, journals and institutions.
This session aims to introduce a variety of resources to explore bibliometric data, to explain how it can be useful and to discuss some of its drawbacks.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand what bibliometrics are and the different measures that are used in bibliometrics
  • Understand the importance and relevance of bibliometric data in research
  • Use Journal Citation Reports (JCR) to find out the impact factor of an academic journal
  • Use the Web of Science and SCOPUS to discover bibliometric data for individual papers and authors, including number of times cited and h-index
  • Explore some solutions to the problem of author identification
