Journeys Documented

A suite of free digital resources for teaching GCSE History modules on the theme of migration.

UCL Special Collections are working towards creating a suite of resources that will provide unique primary sources for the teaching of migration at GCSE level in History. The first focusses on Jewish migration just before, during at immediately after the Second World War. Each written resource will present 10 items from the archive, rare publications or manuscript collection at UCL alongside contextual information and suggested questions that can be used to explore and interpret the sources with pupils.

We have also provided these digitised collection items in a PowerPoint presentation, for ease of use and customisation by the teacher, and four short films in which staff members present a number of the featured items. Take a look at our first instalment in this series of resources!

We have also been working with the East Schools Engagement Team to bring a contemporary perspective to the theme of migration. They have created some short films that explore the unique stories of migration from staff and students at UCL. The films chart personal stories, from the shock and sometime sadness of arrival in London, to homesickness abating as friendships grow and pride in overcoming obstacles, discovering the ability to shape life as desired. We hope that they enable pupils studying migration as part of their GCSE History to consider what it means to leave your home and settle in a new country.

Each year we intend to add a new Special Collections resource that explores another aspect of GCSE History specifications' migration modules. The East Schools Engagement Team also intend to create more films that explore UCL community member's experience of migration, so stay tuned for more additions to the collection!
