New study spaces in the Language and Speech Sciences Library

The UCL Language and Speech Sciences Library reading room has recently been rearranged to increase the seating available by up to 15 spaces, which is a lot for our small space and we are really pleased! We made the changes over Christmas break, ready for Term 2.

What has changed?

Three shelving units near the group study room have been removed and replaced with a large table to seat six students. This has really opened the space up!

Many of our journals are now available electronically via Explore, so the print journal collection was weeded to accommodate the table. Current volumes that we only hold in print are still available in the library; volumes published before 2010 will usually be held in Stores. Stores items can be viewed in the library on request - simply complete a stores request form and it should be available the next working day! There are some exceptions to the above however, so please check Explore for the locations of particular titles.

Our collection of speech and language assessment tests and therapy material was running out of room, so some shelving at the beginning of the sequence has been replaced with deeper units to accommodate it. The table in this area used to seat 6-8 people, but it was a bit awkward to use due to the table legs. This has been replaced with a bespoke meeting table that comfortably seats up to 10! We hope to be able to be able to offer power at both of these new tables soon.

And finally, the wavy bench and low table in front of the window has been replaced with two swish glass tables. These seat 3 to 4 people each and still maximise the light and nice view.
