This is an attempt to standardise the cataloguing of offprints.
Chapter from a book
e.g.:
100 | 1_ | a | Smythe, Johann. |
245 | 14 | a | The mechaniks of cataloguing / |
c | Johann Smythe. | ||
300 | __ | a | p. 260-300 ; |
c | 24 cm. | ||
500 | __ | a | Offprint from: All about libraries / by Johann Smythe. |
700 | 1_ | a | Smythe, Johann. |
t | All about libraries. |
e.g.:
100 | 1_ | a | Jones, Thomas. |
245 | 10 | a | How to catalogue offprints / |
c | Thomas Jones and Huw R. Ewan Evans. | ||
300 | __ | a | p. 100-200 ; |
c | 26 cm. | ||
500 | __ | a | Offprint from: More about libraries / edited by Jean Beauman. |
700 | 1_ | a | Evans, Huw R. Ewan. |
740 | 0_ | a | More about libraries. |
Series: If the source book was in a series (i.e. had a 4XX field) there is no need to include that information in a note, or to make an entry for the series.
Added entries: Use name/title entries (as in the first example) if the source book's main entry was an author (i.e. a 100 field); use title entries if the source book's main entry was the the title (i.e. the 245 field), in which case there is no need to add a separate entry for the author of the source book.

500 | __ | a | Offprint from: Reprints and offprints. Vol. 2, no. 4 (1876). |
740 | __ | a | Reprints and offprints |
Whole issue of a journal

700 | 1_ | a | Bear, Kipper S. |
Unique title?
If the journal issue does have a unique title, follow the first example (issue title in the 245, journal title in the 440); if the journal does not have a unique title, follow the second example (journal title in the 245).
Note that for the journal's enumeration the MARC subfield used is different (v for the 440; n for the 245) and the use of abbreviations is different: don't use abbreviations in a 245 (unless already present) and don't convert Roman to Arabic numerals.
Reprint or Offprint
In general, chapters from books and articles from journals count as offprints; whole journal issues (or whole books) count as reprints. It is sometimes hard to tell whether an item is an offprint of a journal article or is in fact the whole issue. It is obviously impossible to formulate rules that would determine the issue without question, but the following clues may help what must essentially be an issue of common sense:
- Is there a title page/cover for the whole issue?: if there is, assume that is a reprint of an issue; if not assume that it is an offprint.
- Check the pagination and compare it to the known frequency (310, 321) and numbering (362) in the journal's catalogue record.
If in doubt, consider it an offprint and be cautious with what information you give; put doubtful information in notes.
A reprint of an entire journal run is, of course, a different thing altogether.
More than one title and no collective title
Follow AACR2 1.1G. There is no hard and fast rule about which approach to use. However, treat them in the same way as for published works, so that those that were reprinted at the same time should be treated on one record as in 1.1G3; collections of offprints and reprinted works should be described using With notes, i.e. use the procedure described in Linking separately published works in a volume, possibly substituting the title of the first work if there is no spine title.
