An event marking 30 years since the passing of the legislation known as Section 28 or Clause 28. Section 28 was an amendment to the Local Government Act which affected England, Wales and Scotland. Introduced on 24 May 1988, it stated that a local authority ‘shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’ or promote the teaching in schools of ‘the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship’. Section 28 faced mounting protests led by LGBT rights activists and equality campaigners until it was repealed in Scotland in 2000 and in England and Wales in 2003. What effects did Section 28 have during its lifetime? What were its legacies and afterlives, both in the UK and further afield?
Panelists included Mark Delacour (METRO), Savitri Hensman, Veronica McKenzie (Reel Brit Productions) and Sue Sanders (Schools Out). Chaired by Bob Mills (qUCL and UCL History of Art). Organised by qUCL in conjunction with Out@UCL.
