- This is a short Cross Curricular lesson for students to talk about phobias and fear extending their vocabulary and being able to speak and understand the difference between the two. Students will watch a video, read a short text, play a Kahoot video to revise their knowledge and Create a story using TitanPad.

- Vocabulary building on the topic of fear. Watching a video and reading a story about phobias which will enable students to familiarize themselves with the necessary word expressions and phrases.

WARM UP: Describe photos

Discuss3The teachers shows the students various photographs on the powerpoint and asks them to describe them and to discuss what do they represent. The teacher then asks students if there is a difference between phobia and fear. Students own answers.

Read Watch Listen7Students read an adapted article on phobias and fear and do a reading comprehension activity which can be seen on slide 3 in the Power Point.

Discuss5After reading an article teacher asks the students to reflect and asks for feedback.

Produce10While loooking for answers in the article students try to explain many different type of words . They look up for the words and explain them with teachers help. Students can add the new vocabulary in their notebooks or directly to their Tablet using Evernote or OneNote for later use; studying and even updating.
Notes:
NOTE: If students are at a very low level of English a good idea would be to have a Pre-reading vocabulary activity, BUT, if you have a bit of an advanced group the Vocabulary building activity can be done after reading.

PHOBIAS - Watching a video and discuss!

Discuss3Before watching a video students check the list of phobias in their course book or a paper sheet and read them together with the teacher trying to guess the meaning of the words. They also learn how to pronounce different types of phobias, for example: Acrophobia, Mysophobia, Claustropohia etc.

Read Watch Listen6Students then watch a Youtube video with subtitles twice and write down the correct answers on type of phobias mentioned in the video.

Discuss4Students feedback on the video. Checking their answers and talking about types of phobias. Teacher asks students if they were surprised about the name of certain phobias. How did they like the video? Was it funny? etc.

Practice8Revision: Students then use their tablets to enter the Kahoot quiz created by the teacher about the vocabulary on phobias.

Read Watch Listen3After the quiz students are asked to go back in the article and to look for the word expressions which can be used to talk about fear or phobia, for example: "I am scared of.." The teachers shows possible answers in the presentation. (slide 7)

Practice5Students then discuss in pairs about their own fears. They need to report back to the teacher about their collegue's fears using the aimed vocabulary: "He is afraid of... She is terrified of..."

EXPLORE, COLLABORATE and SHARE

Investigate25Students are divided into groups of 4 or 5. Each group has a specific task. They can be divided into group by using TeamUp or by random choice in the classroom itself. Group1 can have a task of finding specific Creative Commons photographs that represent fear. They can search them on their own or teacher can suggest some useful websites. Group 2 - should try to find at least 5 other unusual type of phobias and give their explanation. They can later try to collaborate with group 1. and add the text into images using certain mobile or tablet apps. Group 3 - should investigate some interesting videos that deal with the problem of fear. Group 4 - should seek for other interesting articles about fear and phobias and summarize them etc. All of their work should be shared on a collaborative wall created by the teacher (Padlet, Linoit, . Students share alll of their materials there.

Produce12By the end of the lesson teacher projects the Padlet/Linoit wall on the Whiteboard or smilar) The teacher asks group by group to tell others what they have found and learned. They present their work.

Collaborate45Each group should continue their collaboration from home if possible and use materials they all shared on Padlet/Linoit or any other collaborative tool to create an imaginary 100 words story with insterted photos. They can write their stories in the Onenote, they are supposed to use the vocabulary expressions learned in the class. If students have hard time collaborating from home the lesson can be exteneded, it depends on the teacher.
