Extended learning opportunities and Wikipedia

As part of our commitment to Open Science and Open Knowledge, successful Wikimedia training sessions for students took place in 2025, as part of UCL's Term Three Extended Learning Opportunities.

As part of LCCOS’ commitment to Open Science and Open Knowledge, we have been helping our community develop transferable skills through involvement with open access Wiki platforms. Wikipedia is widely used to look things up online - so including more information about UCL’s expansive collections on one of the most popular websites in the world can only increase engagement with what we hold.

LCCOS staff member Jo Baines has been volunteering with Wikimedia UK since 2022, and became an accredited trainer in 2023. Via the Term Three Extended Learning Opportunities programme, Jo was offered the chance to teach students these skills. The training sessions involved discussions, live examples and empowering participants to share what they already know.

The students in the sessions were very engaged and it was encouraging to see a wide range of subjects represented, from English to Computer Science. Jo hopes to build on these student opportunities and in the meantime is developing a Wikimedia strategy with LCCOS colleagues and collaborating with Wikimedia UK to explore how UCL communities can increase involvement in all the platforms they support.
