New guidance on text and data mining

Teams across LCCOS have worked together to publish new guidance on Text and Data Mining.

Research that involves text and data mining (TDM) can be quite complex from a copyright point of view. When carrying out TDM projects, researchers often need to understand publishers’ licensing terms, relevant copyright law and technological constraints. Decisions around using, processing and sharing materials for TDM often involve some degree of judgement and risk.

Several LCCOS teams  - Copyright Support, E-resources, the Office for Open Science and Library Skills - worked together to address issues arising in TDM projects. A briefing paper highlighted the main issues and put forward recommendations. The outcome of this exercise was new guidance on copyright and TDM, published in May 2024, which complements an existing LibGuide. Please also see a relevant post on the UCL Open Science blog.
