Biography

James Allan Allan of Galston, Ayr, owner of Mount Airy in St Andrews, Jamaica. His wife Agnes Allan Allan (q.v.) unsuccessfully counterclaimed for dower as his widow in 1835. The claim was originally made by Alex Forbes of St Andrew as trustee and executor of James A. Allan decd., and the compensation was paid to Benjamin Joseph Trueman Nightingale, who counterclaimed as mortgagee-in-fee and judgement creditor.

  1. Date and place of birth unknown. According to his will, his mother was Mary Allan nee Luckie. Married Agnes Kirkwood in Paisley, Scotland, in 1809. Three children baptised in Cambuslang (1810, 1811, 1815) and three in Galston (1818, 1821, 1825).

  2. Will of James Allan Allan of Galston, dated 20/10/1829. Mount Airy was sold by Alexander Allan of Beamsville in the 1840s.

James Allan Allan of the parish of Galston, Ayrshire, but about to proceed to Kingston in Jamaica.

To Alexander Campbell Hunter, accountant, Tokenhouse Yard, London, John Horare Freer of Clifton Street, Finsbury, Middlesex and Alexander Kirkwood, merchant of Campbelltown in Argyllshire, all my real and personal estate upon trust.

My wife Agnes Allan Allan otherwise Kirkwood, so long as she shall remain a widow, to have hold and enjoy my household goods, furniture and personal estate, and also to receive from my trustees the rents and profits of my real estate for the support of herself and for the support and education of my children.

On the death of my wife or on her remarriage then to divide the real and personal estate equally amongst all and every of my children then living.

I recomment to my wife and family that they assist my mother Mary Luckie otherwise Allan according to their discretion and that in case of her decease they shall give her a decent internment.

My trustees to also be executors.

Codicil dated 21/10/1830. At present of Mount Airy Plantation in St Andrew, Jamaica. To Alexander Forbes of the City and Parish of Kingston, manufacturer of preserves and pickles, also to be trustee and executor.
