Biography

Son of James Baillie of Bedford Square (1744-1828) (q.v.) and Catherine Gordon, and probably grandson of David Baillie, the fourth son of Alexander Baillie of Dochfour.

  1. Born 04/09/1786. Eton, Cambridge and Middle Temple. Married Louisa Stewart, daughter of Lt-Gen Hon. Sir William Stewart in 1829. Four sons. Given as of 14 Belgrave Square and Hill Park Westerham on his death. James Baillie of Bedford Square 'a London merchant' left £250,000 in 1828, and appears to have been an illegitimate offspring of the Dochfour family.

  2. David Baillie was a contemporary of Byron's 'at Aberdeen' and appears in the letters and journals of Byron for 1807.

  3. Adm. pens. (age 18) at TRINITY, Jan. 22, 1805. S. of James, of Estlemont Castle, Aberdeens. School, Eton. Matric. Easter, 1806; B.A. 1810. Perhaps adm. at the Middle Temple, Dec. 19, 1803, as s. of James, Esq., of Bedford. Of Hill Park, Westerham, Kent, and of 14, Belgrave Square, London. Married Louisa, dau. of General the Hon. Sir William Stewart, G.C.B., Oct. 29, 1829. Died June 17, 1861, aged 74, in Belgrave Square. Father of Charles H. (1856), Alexander H. (1858) and William H. (1854). (Burke, Fam. Records.)

  4. Died 17/06/1861 late of Belgrave Square, will proved 23/07/1861 by sons William Henry Baillie and James William Baillie, and by Crawford Davison Kerr, the merchant. Personal estate £250,000.

  5. The full destination of David Baillie's wealth is uncertain. His eldest son James William Baillie left £59,248 15s on his death in Leicestershire in 1906 (apparently as James William Murray-Baillie of Ilston Grange), Charles Hugh Baillie left £20,167 on his death in Transvaal in 1901, while William Henry Baillie left £1479 11s 2d on his death at Tunbridge Wells in 1920 and Alexander Horatio Baillie £1203 2s 11d in 1926. His other son, Henry David Baillie, predeceased him in 1859.

  1. William D. Rubinstein, Who were the rich? 1860- (Volumes 3 and 4, manuscripts in preparation), reference 1861/4. According to this entry, David Baillie is shown as the son of James Baillie 'of Estlemont Castle' in Burke's Landed Gentry 1914 and Alum. Cantab., but as the son of 'James Baillie of Bedford Square' in the entry in the Middle Temple Admission Book. The Eton alumni book specifies him as 'of the Dockfour family'. Rubinstein comments that there is no evidence to link James Baillie of Bedford Square with Estlemont. James Baillie of 14 Bedford Square is in William D. Rubinstein, Who were the rich? A biographical dictionary of British wealth-holders Volume One 1809-1839 (London, Social Affairs Unit, 2009) reference 1828/9; Will of James Baillie of Bedford Square proved 23/01/1828, PROB 11/1735/324.
