Philip Lytcott Hinds

Apparently resident in Barbados in the 1830s (he made his own registration in 1834) but in Britain at least from the mid-1840s, dying at Portland Place in 1876 and leaving £250,000. Son of Hon. Samuel Hinds.

1. In 1846, Philip L. Hinds was shown as living at 69 Baker Street. In 1851 Phillip [sic] L. Hinds 'Gentleman' was at 61 Portland Place aged 59 with wife Mary J. aged 54, 5 children all born Barbados and Samuel Hinds 'brother-in-law' aged 56 'Bishop of Norwich'. In 1861 Philip L. Hinds was at 61 Portland Place 'proprietor of railways etc.' aged 69 with wife Mary Jane 65 born Barbados and daughter Mary J., 36 also born Barbados. In 1871 aged 79 widower born Barbados he was at 27 [sic] Portland Place. Will of Philip Lytcott Hinds late of 61 Portland Place who died 01/01/1876 proved 24/02/1876 by William Hinds of 20 Hyde Park Square the son and Thomas Daniel Hill and George Henry Chambers of 4 Mincing Lane.

2. [April 1858] At St George's Hanover Sq., by Right Rev. Bishop Hinds assisted by Rev Hinds Howell, rector of Drayton, Norfolk, uncles of the bride, [marriage of] Edward Thornhill, eldest son of Edward Archer Applewhaite Esq. of Pickenham Hall Norfolk to Eleanore, youngest dau. of Philip Lytcott Hinds Esq. of 61 Portland-place London.

3. Owner of portrait of Clement VII by Sebastiano del Piombo, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum (sold by Philip Lytcott Hinds, Christie's, London, June 1, 1861, lot 69, to Tayleure.) (As Sebastiano del Piombo, Portrait of Leo X).

4. The will of his brother Samuel gives their mother as Eleanor and sisters as Mary, Ellen, Ann Richards (formerly Hinds) and Susan.

5. Judge of the Precincts of Courts of Common Pleas in Barbados 1821. Settled in England 1835.

6. According to the Charterhouse Register 1769 -1872 Hinds was born on 4 August 1791 and died in London 1 January 1876.
