Biography

Helen Mackellar (née Stirling), wife of Rev. Angus Mackellar (q.v.), inherited part-share in Hampden and Kerr estates in Jamaica from her father William Stirling (1725-1793).

  1. Parents William Stirling and Jane [or Jean] Stuart. Born Cadder, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Married Rev. Angus MacKellar 17/0/1814; the Register of Proclamations for St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, gives her as Miss Helen Stirling, daughter of the late William Stirling Esqr of Keir, residing No 3 S[h]andwick Place. 1851 census: living at 8 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, with daughter Jane Ann MaKellar and four servants.

  2. Archibald Stirling (q.v.) and Robert Stirling (q.v.) are her half-brothers by her father's first wife Helen Gray (born 1769 and 1772 respectively).

  3. Gravestone inscription, Dean cemetery, Edinburgh: Rev Angus MaKellar, age 78, buried 1859; Helen Stirling, age 76, buried 1859; Jane Anne MaKellar, age 54, buried 1875; John Archibald MaKellar, age 54, buried 1877.
