Biography

Son of Enoch, born Barbados, clergyman in London and brother-in-law of Bryan Taylor Young (q.v.) who was the trustee of the marriage settlement between Bryan Taylor Nurse and Jane Gaitskill.

  1. Born Barbados c. 1799, matriculated Queen Oxford 17/06/1818 (BA 1822), living 1861 at 9 St Paul's Road Islington, Chaplain of the French Hospital aged 62 born West Indies Barbados with wife Jane (born Southwark, aged 58) and daughter Elizabeth (unm., age 33, born Barbados). Death registered Q1 1880 Bethnal Green.

  2. In 1821, Bryan Taylor Nurse, having inherited 21 or so enslaved people under the will of Enoch Nurse, had sold the same number of enslaved people to John Bayley Nurse, for £3150 securing the debt by an indenture, a judgement on which he then assigned to Bryan Taylor Young as trustee of the marriage settlement on Nurse's marriage with Jane Gaitskill. The compensation for the enslaved on Hope Estate was paid to Young in his capacity as trustee, but the beneficiaries were Nurse and his wife.  

  3. The 1823 Barbados Slave Register records that Bryan Taylor Nurse owned 20 enslaved, a gift under the will of Enoch Forte Nurse. There was also the birth of 1 enslaved person recorded. It further notes that the 21 were sold to John Bayley Nurse.
