Biography

Resident planter in the 1830s, builder of Villa Nova in St John in 1834, but dying in Cheltenham Q2 1846, brother of General Robert Haynes (q.v.). Married twice: (1) to Sarah Bell, daughter of Francis Bell (died 1808), the owner of the Belmont estate; (2) to Lucy (or Lucretia) Reed, daughter of George Reed (q.v.).

  1. The will of Edmund Haynes of Saint Sidwell Devon whose will was proved 25/05/1846 was the same man. The will appears to make no direct reference to Barbados property but it does refer to his brother Robert Haynes, and includes legacies to a daughter of John Groscort Reed and to Ann Elvira Reed, widow of John Groscort Reed. This identification is reinforced by the details below.

There is a headstone in St Peter's Leckhampton (near Cheltenham): In memory of / Edmund Haynes, / Of the island of Barbados /Afterwards of the city of Exeter, England. / Born at Barbados, Feb. 19. 1781 / Died at Cheltenham, May 2. 1846. / And of / Lucretia Haynes, / His relict, fourth daughter / Of George Reed, esq. / Of Barbados and Dockfour, Demerara. / Born at Barbados, Nov. 19. 1797. / Died at Exeter May 24. 18[7]4. / Whose earthly remains repose together / Beneath this spot.

  3. His widow Lucretia Haynes left £10,000 when she died of Colyford Villa Exeter in 1874.
