Biography

The compensation for both St Kitts nos. 207 and 208 was paid into the Chancery suit of Neave v Douglas, and the two claims should be analysed together. Although the Chancery suit of Neave v Douglas has not been examined, the compensation records include T71/1609: letter, dated 20/09/1835, from Wm. Douglas, 59 Prospect Place, West Square (Edinburgh? London?), stating that Wm. Douglas is tenant for life. His son is tenant in tail and has family: the estates are subject to his father's debts and are in the hands of the merchant, Sir Thomas Neave, who is receiver in Chancery and also mortgagee. Wm Douglas asks: how much per head and to whom will the Commissioners pay our share of it?

This Wm. Douglas is possibly the son (b. 1755), more plausibly a grandson, of John St Leger Douglas (q.v.), who left his estates in St Kitts in trust for his son William Douglas.
