Biography

Awarded the compensation for the Crawle estate in Jamaica after counter-claiming  with John Morant and Robert Lambert as mortgagees for £12,000 against Edward Morant Gale the owner.

  1. George Morant who was the son of John Morant II of Brockenhurst (d. 1794) and younger brother of John Morant III (q.v.). Edward Gregory Morant Gale was the brothers' uncle, and Edward Morant (d. 1791) their grandfather. Their father John Morant III (d. 1794) had three surviving children, John II (b. 1787), Jane (b. 1788) and George (b. 1791). Jane married General Sir John Lambert (the son of Robert Alexander Lambert and Catherine Byndloss) in 1816.

  2. The will of George Morant formerly of Roundway House near Devizes but late of Henbury House Wimborne who died 17/12/1875 was proved 25/01/1876 by Horatio Harbord Morant the son and Robert Lambert the nephew, effects under £10,000.

  3. All three sons of John Morant of Brockenhurst were at Harrow, Edward (who died at Walcheren in 1809) and John between 1801 and 1807 and George between 1804 and '1808-9'.

T71/855 St Thomas-in-the-Vale No. 297; in another estate owned by Edward Morant Gale, Mt Hindmost, John and George Morant again counterclaimed with Roger [sic] Lambert apparently under the same mortgage, but the money was awarded only to John Morant who had also counterclaimed separately, T71/859 Clarendon No. 15.
