Biography

Son of John Vincent Purrier (1773-1833) and brother of John Vincent Purrier (d. 1849) (q.v.) and (almost certainly) of Thomas Purrier (c. 1809-1873) (q.v.). John Vincent Purrier the elder was a partner in Hibbert, Fuhr and Purrier (q.v., under G.W.S. Hibbert).

  1. Married 17/08/1837 Isabella Christian Johnston, daugher of Alexander Carruthers Johnston, at St Marylebone when he was identifed as of Nottingham Place and as the son of John Vincent Purrier. Appears in 1841 'merchant' living in Nottingham Place with his widowed mother C[harlotte] M[aria] and his wife aged 25 and two young daughters; and in 1851 at 27 Nottingham Place aged 48 born Woodford 'East India Merchant' with I.C. Purrier. The births and baptisms of his children show his movement between Calcutta and London: Isabella Margaret (1839, London), Charlotte Maria (1840, London), Ada Margaret Leslie (1843, Calcutta), Edward Arthur Cruikshank (1846, London), Mary Louisa (1849, Calcutta) and Ellen Charlotte (1850, Calcutta).

  2. The death of Isabella Christian Purrier was registered at Richmond Q4 1853. "The Will with three Codicils of Edward Purrier late of Calcutta in the East Indies and of 5 Gloucester-crescent North in the Parish of Paddington in the County of Middlesex deceased who died 7 July 1858 at Gloucester-crescent North aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Patrick Cruikshank of 11 Great St. Helen’s Bishopsgate-street in the City of London Merchant and Thomas Purrier of 35 New Broad-street in the said City Solicitor the Brother the Executors. Probate of the said Will being granted under certain Specialities. Effects under £1,000."
