The identities of this man and Thomas Stirling his co-mortgagee on Ardoch have not been established, but it is possible that the two men were the natural sons of Charles Stirling, previous owner of Ardoch, born 1794 and 1792 respectively. Thomas was described in the counterclaim as of Kingston in the County of Surrey [presumably Jamaica]; and William as Captain in the East India Co.
Alternatively, these may be the Stirling branch of Law and Edinbarnet. William Colquhoun Stirling of Law was a surgeon in the East India Company who married Helen, youngest daughter of Archibald Calder, merchant in Glasgow, 28/01/1822. Ardoch estate in Scotland is less than 10 miles from Edinbarnet House.
